Announcing the Six Month Art Challenge!
Practice makes perfect, right? At the start of this month I decided to challenge myself to six months of art creation. Everyday I’m going to make at least one new sketch, and then after six months I’ll be able to look back and see how much I’ve improved.
So often I think ‘art’ is one of those things we build up in our minds as something only a select few folks are any good at. We lose sight of the learning and practice process all artists work through, and we frame being an ‘artist’ as sort of a stagnant achievement one either is or isn’t, rather than an unfolding relationship to our creativity that can be constantly improved on and grown in new directions.
Recently I’ve been working a lot with charcoal and oil pastels. I haven’t used either medium for about 15 years and would consider myself way out of practice. Since I started this challenge, I’ve completed several sketches and am eager to keep exploring.
I plan to post most if not all of my sketches on Instagram in hopes of demystifying the art learning process and also just because I love the work I create. I hope you’ll feel encouraged to try out this challenge too if you’d like! Imagine how much the world could change if we all spent the next six months honing our creative expression….
Happy drawing, readers!
