Re-Attuning to Your Greatness Through the Lion's Gate
Bodywork can do wonders for your healing journey, but one of the most important things I'm still learning is that so much of the work involved in an individual's self-actualization is their own work, not just the massages and coaching and energetic healing you can receive from others.
In the vein of that wisdom, I'm encouraging my practice of bodywork to root in more unconventional directions. I'm finding and learning to cherish its connections to permaculture, deep ecology, myth, ritual performance, and more.
This post kicks off an integration with astrology because today, August 8th, 2018 is the peak of a very special astrological highlight known as the Lion's Gate. Below you'll find some information about the importance of this event, as well as a set of affirmations that can help you easily benefit from the cosmic energies that are present.
Leos, Eights, & Solar Vibes
The peak of the Lion's Gate comes to us both around the middle of Leo season (late July to late August) and the halfway point between the Summer Solstice and Autumnal Equinox. Seasonally we're at that height of summer point where we're beginning our transition into the autumn, and the energy of this astrological event evokes a similar sense within ourselves. The peak of the Lion's Gate is about stepping into our own regal power and preparing for the year ahead.
In natal astrology, Leos are associated with charisma, leadership, power, and dignity. These same energies will be present for all of us through the Lion's Gate. Leo teaches us to claim our place as rulers of our own Universe. And as the middle fire sign between Aries and Sagittarius, Leo is all about accomplishing that middle distance, building on our past, and fueling the future.
In the Waite-Smith Tarot, Leo is usually associated with the Strength card, which in the Thoth deck appears as the Lust card. These cards are simultaneously about celibacy and sensuality, fortitude and passion. They are about claiming ownership over yourself and the direction of your life.
In addition to these cards from the Major Arcana, three Minor Arcana cards are assigned to each zodiac sign, corresponding to the decan or degree of the Sun's movement through the sign. For the peak of the Lion's Gate, we're actually in the second zodiac decan. Here, Leo energy is accompanied by Sagittarian, free-spirited ambition, as well as Jupiter's grandiose and authoritative energy. Our associated Minor Arcana card is the Six of Wands, which is all about triumph after strife and coming home to our power.
The date of the Lion's Gate peak is also important. In numerology, eights are associated with infinite energy, harmony, and awareness of the cyclical nature of life. This year we see three 8s in the Lion's Gate, August 8th being the eighth day of the eighth month of the year, and 2018 being the eighth year of this decade.
Essentially, we are in a moment poised to reclaim control of our lives, our kingdoms, and our futures from whatever other forces are at work obstructing us. All signs point to our success, all energies are in our favor. The Lion's Gate is an astrological opportunity to soak up the sun and prepare to fuel yourself for the year to come.
Roaring into the Next Year
While some astrologers may focus on how the Lion's Gate relates to individual zodiac signs, truthfully, we are all able to tap into this queenly Leo power, and if anything, this event is about choosing your own destiny rather than feeling fated one way or the other. Even if just for today, we are all our own priestesses, our own queens, and our own magicians.
The great thing about setting your magical intentions with Leo energy is that planning an intricate ritual isn't necessary. You are the temple. You are the Sun. Your life is the magical working. All the ingredients for success are already within. All you need to do on this auspicious day is set aside a few moments to yourself to feel it, to recharge in the sunlight or revel in the light of your inner divinity.
For those in need of a little more structure and guidance, try out this simple affirmative prayer:
"I am in control of my mind and my energy. I am opening myself to knowledge of my purpose in life, and I am freeing myself from all obstacles holding me back from achieving it."
The truth is that many of us go through our lives without much time to even consider what our purpose here may be. It's a beautiful gift to be able to know yourself at that level and fine-tune your strategies towards success from that point. But for everyone else still getting there, make use of the Lion's Gate to reaffirm your desire to simply know this purpose.
This year ahead is going to be great. Feel it.
